What is Biblical Counseling?
Biblical Counseling utilizes the solutions God provides through Scripture to the problems that come with living in a sinful world. The Bible helps us define and understand the problems and is our guide for developing solutions. Biblical Counselors work in cooperation with God’s Word and the Holy Spirit to help resolve the problems we face every day.
The Biblical Counselors at Stones Crossing Church have received formal training in Biblical Counseling. They are not licensed social workers, therapists, psychologists, or psychiatrists, but rather they are counselors who love the Lord and love people. All Biblical Counselors have completed at least three levels of training in Biblical Counseling, and some are certified Biblical Counselors through the International Association of Biblical Counselors (IABC).
How is Biblical Counseling is Different From Therapy or Psychology?
2 Timothy 3:16-17 expresses how the Word of God applies to every arena of life—making believers complete and equipped. Biblical Counseling differs from secular psychology, and even Christian counseling. Most counseling therapies begin with man’s understanding of humanity. Biblical counseling begins with God’s view of mankind, and since He created us, He knows us best. Many secular therapies only address symptoms, rather than the root cause of problems. Biblical counselors address the root of man’s problems (sin) and work to resolve these problems using Biblical solutions as directed from God’s Word. Our goal is holiness—not just happiness. It’s not merely about “feeling” better, but also living the abundant life God has in store for us as we grow closer to Christ and we live to please Him and bring Him glory.
